Intent

The PE curriculum at Burton Green Primary follows the National Curriculum. It is our intention that all children from our 2 year old provision to year 6 have access to high quality PE provision which is why we employ a full time PE teacher. Our children’s physical development is a high priority and we want our children to become physically competent in ways that can support their physical and mental health and fitness and importantly enjoyment of physical activity. Through our rich PE curriculum our pupils build skills and competencies in a range of sports developing their  understanding of the importance of sportsmanship linking to our school values. We aim to support our children’s memory, focus, social skills and self esteem whilst developing their character through exposure to team games, competition and fair play.

We offer a vast range of  extracurricular sports clubs and activities that take place before and after school. These include; dance, netball, multiskills, rugby, football, gymnastics and tennis. We also run an ‘alternative’ sports club to enable our pupils to try curling, table tennis, archery and yoga.

Implementation

Pupils at Burton Green love their PE lessons, they show high self esteem and personal drive to achieve. The wide range of sports that are offered through our PE curriculum enables all children to find activities that they can excel at. All classes have a minimum of two hours PE per week. We have a large bank of resources to support our PE curriculum and enable high quality teaching and clear progression of skills of skills.

As a school we take part in a number of competitive sports with other schools including, football, benchball and netball.

Impact

The impact of our Physical Education curriculum at Burton Green is children who  are physically confident and gain exceptional enjoyment from physical activity through rich opportunities across a wide range of sports and activities. Our curriculum also enables children to understand the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle and the link between physical health and wellbeing. Early Years sports stay and play sessions ensure that parents are offered the experience of a PE lesson with their children.

From Early Years to year 6 we support and encourage children to take and manage physical risk. This is supported through our PE lessons, Early Years outdoor provision and through residential trips.
